Dozens of Kensington residents are sailing into new jobs thanks to training funded by Kensington Regeneration and JET Eastern Link.
A total of 23 people from the Kensington area have undergone seafaring training since January, of whom 18 have found jobs at sea.
"I didn't believe it could happen at first, but then I went for training with Seascope Marine Services and since then I have worked on the Isle of Man ferries; various ships to Dunkirk; and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary," said one local trainee.
Trainees at Liverpool based recruitment and training agency Seascope learn a range of skills leading to qualifications, from crowd management to food hygiene. Seascope then help their clients find work with shipping companies.
The Kensington seafarers were helped on their way by JET Eastern Link staff based at the Job Bank in Wavertree. Training Liaison Co-ordinator Margaret Wilson said: "Our team has worked hard with residents to make this training a success and we are all delighted to see so many local people succeeding in their desire to go to sea."
Alfie Hincks of Seascope Marine Services said: "We train people and then find them opportunities to work and we are having more success with residents from Kensington than any other part of Liverpool, which is fantastic."
